5 Ways to Celebrate “Sweetest Day” with a Senior October 17

Senior Care in Boca Raton FL

On the third Saturday in October, some people in the nation will celebrate “Sweetest Day.”  While it is mostly celebrated throughout the Northeast and Great Lakes Regions, it’s a day to sweets no matter where you live.  So what exactly is Sweetest Day?

It’s a day to remember the marginalized members of our society; the orphans, the sick, and the elderly as well as our friends and family and anyone that has ever helped us, shown us kindness, and who has made us feel special and loved. “Sweetest Day,” then, is for everyone to celebrate by giving someone special – a senior, a senior care provider, or other appreciated individual or loved one – a box of their favorite sweets, usually chocolates.  Here are a few ways to celebrate this sweet day with a senior.

1.  To recognize an elderly loved one – a parent, aunt, grandparent, or neighbor for example – plan a visit ahead of time and bring a box of chocolates to share.  Plan to spend a couple of hours sampling the chocolates and chatting.  Bring along their favorite hot drink for the cool weather, such as a box of tea or coffee sampler.

2. For the elderly who are still mobile and up for visiting friends, they can create a unique bag of sweets with the help of their senior care provider. Then the two of them can spend the day delivering the treats to the senior’s friends and family.

3.  The purpose of “Sweetest Day” is to do something sweet for someone who’s been sweet in the first place. Senior care providers are some of the sweetest people out there. They offer both companionship and assistance to the seniors they serve. Why not show how much senior care workers are appreciated by giving them a box of their favorite sweets on “Sweetest Day?”

4.  Find sweet, delicious substitutions for those who can’t have sugar.  There are many candy companies that sell boxes of assorted sugarless chocolates that look at taste amazing.  Also, finding a healthy, sugar free recipe online for sweet chocolate or cookies and baking them is another option.

5.  Invite a senior to experience “Sweetest Day” by visiting a local candy factory or candy store.  This way, they can get out of the house, socialize, and pick out their favorite treats themselves.
