Caregiver Indulgence: Smoothing Homemade Lip Balm

Caregiver in Margate FL

Your lips are one of the most sensitive areas of your body. Constantly exposed to the elements, your lips have only a very thin layer of skin. During the day you eat, drink, talk, lick, and do many other things that put the health of your skin at risk. When they start to feel dry, chapped, or even split, you probably reach for a tube of commercial lip balm to soothe them. While these products may feel good when you put them on, within a few hours your lips probably feel even dryer and more sensitive than they did before. This is because most commercial lip balms contain products that hydrate on contact, but quickly evaporate and leave your lips even dryer than they were. This is further irritated by additives such as menthol that give the product a cool feeling but can irritate the skin.

Using high-quality natural products gives your lips the hydration they crave and encourages them to heal without creating a layer that prevents natural moisture from reaching your lips. This caregiver indulgence is for homemade lip balm that is soothing and nurturing to your lips so they stay comfortable and healthy no matter what the weather. This product is perfect for helping your elderly loved ones maintain comfortable lips without using potentially irritating chemicals, and can even be used as a salve to heal extremely dry, cracked hands and feet.

What You’ll Need

• 1 tablespoon grated beeswax

• 1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil or olive oil

• 1 teaspoon raw honey

• 2 vitamin E capsules

• Essential oil, if desired

• Double boiler

• Small container such as a metal mint tin, a shot glass, or fillable lip balm tubes

What to Do

• Placed the beeswax into a double boiler over medium heat and melt until it as approximately half solid

• Add the coconut or olive oil and the honey and continue to heat until all of the ingredients are fully melted

• Stir to combine

• Open the vitamin E capsules and squeeze the contents into the mixture

• Stir to fully incorporate all of the ingredients

• If desired, add several drops of your favorite essential oil at this point. Peppermint, lavender, rose, vanilla, and almond are good choices for essential oils to add to lip balm, but remember that the honey in the mixture acts as both a humectant and a sweetener. This means that when you detect the fragrance of the essential oil, the sweetness of the honey will trick your mind into thinking that the lip balm is flavored as that essential oil. If you choose to use an oil, make sure it is a fragrance you would like to “taste”

• At this point you can also add a drop of skin-safe, non-toxic color to tint the balm. This is particularly effective if you want to give a container or two to loved ones as a gift

• Pour the mixture carefully into your container or containers of choice and allow to cool completely until solid

• Apply by rubbing your finger on the balm and massaging gently onto the lips. Use as needed.
