Do You Have A Routine for your Baby’s Nap-time? Learn the times to avoid so that it doesn’t interfere with a good night’s sleep.

Pediatric Home Health Care near Boynton Beach, FL – The Dos and Don’ts of Nap-time

When your little one yawns and rubs her eyes, it may be a signal it’s nap-time. There could also be other clues like crying, and fussiness. When a baby becomes overtired they have a much harder time settling down to go to sleep. For older babies, you may also see clinginess, clumsiness or even hyperactivity.

What should you do if baby falls asleep in his car seat? No need to wake him up; just carry him inside and lay him on his bed. Newborns may sleep around 16 hours daily and only wake up for feeding or getting a clean diaper. Each baby is different but by 6 months old most babies sleep through the night plus take several naps during the day.

Try not to give him most of his naps on the go. If you have a very busy schedule and you notice he takes most of his naps in the car seat or the baby stroller, consider rearranging your schedule so he gets used to napping in his bed. You can use a babysitter to stay with him or ask someone to help you with getting your errands done so you can stay home.

Babies will naturally want to fall asleep after a feeding. It’s a good time for you and baby to feel close and get some cuddle time. It’s a good idea to let babies learn to fall asleep on their own, so try to separate nursing from napping even if it’s just a few minutes in between. You could read a little story or change their diaper in between.

Naps are better when they are longer and fewer of them. By 6 months old it’s better to take 2 or 3 naps that last 1-2 hours than it is to be napping 20 minutes at a time for 6 or 7 times per day.

Making a little routine for naptime will help your baby settle down better. If his crib is used only for sleeping then when he’s in there he will know what to do. Try to avoid naps that are too late in the afternoon because it will interfere with a good nights’ sleep.

Don’t rush in if you only hear little squeaks and sighs. However if you think he’s uncomfortable, unsafe or hungry go in and check. There’s a lot of debate about when to go in and comfort baby when they’re crying so follow the parental instincts you have and if you still have concerns check with your pediatrician.

For your medically fragile child, consider pediatric home health care. Having the medically trained care you need for your child will keep him safe and comfortable and loved.
