Vacuuming may not always be the best solution to combat dust mites and allergens. Keeping your child’s allergic symptoms under control requires a slightly different approach. Here are six simple ways to keep your home dust and allergen-free:

  1. A normal vacuum will actually stir up fine dust that can exacerbate your child’s allergic symptoms. In this case, it is best to vacuum when the child is out of the house—at school, for example.
Tip: A high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter is another effective way to keep dust storms down while vacuuming.
  2. Clean all laminate, tile, or hardwood floors with a damp mop and wipe down flat surfaces, ledges, and pictures frames with a damp cloth.
  3. Almost any kind of heating system is better than forced-air heating for cutting down on dust, dust mites and other allergens. The forced-air heating vents often fill with dust and debris. If this is the only option, make sure a professional does a yearly duct cleaning.
  4. A HEPA air cleaner installed centrally in a force-air ventilation system or as a portable room unit can be effective at reducing allergy symptoms, however it will not control for mites. If you do use a HEPA cleaner, again make sure windows and doors are closed to prevent outside allergens from coming in.
  5. Dust mites are the main culprit behind allergens in your household dust. Since they thrive in a moderately warm, moist atmosphere, reducing household humidity can drastically reduce the dust mite population. A dehumidifier is an effective way to dry out the air and keep your dust mites under control.
  6. Check all HEPA and air conditioner filters regularly and spray them with an anti-mildew aerosol to control any mold growth. If you use a dehumidifier, ensure that the pan is emptied and cleaned daily to avoid microscopic mold.
  7. Never use a broom on hard floors. Brooms always stir dust up into the air.
  8. Take out old carpets and replace with hard floors. You can never remove all the dust from a carpet, even a freshly cleaned one.
  9. Change the furnace filter regularly
  10. Rotate bedding weekly, especially the bedding of your affected child.
  11. Place vinyl pillow protectors over the pillows or toss old pillows and buy new ones on a yearly basis.
