Eating Healthier by Growing Your Own Food: Caregiver Thoughts on Gardening

Caregiver in Boynton FL

In recent years there has been a greater push for people to pay attention to the foods they eat, especially fruits and vegetables. While there are GMOs (Genetically Modified Organics) that have gained a lot of attention recently because they are potentially harmful for human consumption, the notion of gardening and growing one’s own fruits and vegetables has been around for many generations.  As people moved away from farms and toward the bigger cities in pursuit of a different future, there has been a greater reliance on supermarkets to get fresh fruits and vegetables.

Gardening can be a great activity for seniors.  Not only will it provide them with fruits and vegetables, but it would also provide them with some physical activity.  It also provides them the chance to look after something on a regular basis.

Even the busy caregiver who is constantly on the go can certainly benefit by gardening. However, many family caregivers don’t feel as though they have time to look after garden, especially when they are taking care of an elderly loved one, such as a parent or grandparent. As a result, they may give up gardening if they had done this in the past until their loved one no longer requires assistance on a regular basis.

However, there’s no need to give this up! The caregiver can simply change where he or she gardens and continue participating in this healthy activity.  If the elderly individual has enough space in his or her yard to plant a garden, this could really be something to consider. If he or she lives relatively close to the caregiver, that could be a daily or every other day activity to participate in for an hour or two a day.

There are also community gardens throughout many areas of the country where people can rent a small piece of the community garden to grow their own particular fruits and vegetables.  When people grow their own vegetables, this helps encourage healthier eating. By using the vegetables one grows themselves, they may take a more vested interest in the foods they actually consume.

April is National Garden Month, making it the perfect time to plan out a garden.
