Finding a Right Caregiver for Mom when Hiring Home Care Services in Boca Raton, FL

Cara had encouraged her mother to hire home care services. Cara knew that her mother needed some help around the house. She had fallen a couple times and was beginning to struggle with her own hygiene. Cara talked to her mother for a long period of time about home care services, but it took several months to convince her that it was the right decision.

One of Cara’s arguments to help convince her mother that this was the right choice for her was that she told her mother they were very personable, friendly individuals who have true compassion and would make her feel comfortable from the beginning.

Cara argued this with her mother because she knew a couple of people who had been in-home care service providers in the past. When the caregiver showed up to Cara’s mother’s house, her mother as well as Cara were surprised by the clinical approach that the woman had to providing home care.

Cara got the impression right away that this woman was going to treat her mother like a client rather than a person living at home alone. In other words, Cara had assumed that all in-home care services treat their patients as individuals with feelings and emotions. This woman went about things as though it was a job for her.

There are going to be many different types of caregivers working with in-home care services. Some will have a more clinical approach because they might not have experience or it keeps them from becoming emotionally involved with the patient. Others will take a more personable approach and get to know the patient and treat him or her as they might a friend or other family member.

There is not a right or wrong approach with regard to this except how it affects the patient. Some patients will respond better to caregivers who provide a more clinical approach to their work. Others will prefer a more personable and emotional attachment to the person who is coming into their home and spending a significant amount of time with them.

For Cara’s mother, it ended up working out better this way because she required assistance with some very personal and intimate matters, such as bathing and toileting. She ended up feeling more comfortable because of the emotional distance that the caregiver kept from her.

If you are planning on hiring home care services, it is a good idea to talk to the agency or the caregiver to find out whether they treat their patients in a clinical manner as clients or if they take a more personal, emotional approach.
