Keeping Your Seniors Healthier and Happier While Aging in Their Own Homes

Elder Care in Deerfield Beach FL

As people are thinking ahead about their retirement years and beyond, agencies like the American Association of Retired Persons, (AARP), have begun a dialog about what will make the seniors in our country happiest in their retirement years. Here are some important facts to begin thinking about as a senior citizen or as a family member of a senior citizen.

Upwards of sixty-nine percent of seniors think about their ability to live independently during their retirement years; seventy-five to eighty percent of adult children of seniors are already thinking about this. They are concerned about how to help with their parents’ wishes to continue to live in their own home even after they begin to need day-to-day personal home care assistance.

Another poll completed by Met Life Insurance got a 91 percent response from pre-retirees in the age group of 50-65 years, saying they intend to reside in their own homes whether they plan to keep the home they have or purchase a single story with features more suited to independent living while aging.

“Aging in Place”
Seniors tend to want to continue living in their own home during their retirement years and beyond. In fact, current polls show that 90 percent of seniors intend to remain in their own homes even when they need personal day-to-day assistance and when they need medical care in the home. Only nine percent of pre-retirement seniors are thinking about moving to a retirement facility or nursing home for added personal care or medical care. This demonstrates an increasing need for a national work force of reliable, well-trained senior caregivers in coming years.

Changes in the Seniors’ Home
In-home living, or “aging in place”, will require changes to an elderly person’s environment. Most seniors are already concerned about changing things in their homes or moving to a home that is more convenient for aging. Reconstruction and remodeling is an option to create entrances without steps, non-slip flooring, and an installed personal alert system for instant emergency calls. Important details like lower electrical switches for wheelchair access, and higher electrical plugs to avoid bending down are top of the list items. Another alteration for wheelchair access is the widening of doorways and lowering cabinets.  Older adults also consider installing walk-in tubs and other bathroom features like grab bars for balance.

Seventy-five percent of accidental deaths in people over 65 years old are related to injuries from falling. It is wise to be thinking about home renovations before reaching retirement age. The National Home Builder’s Association is expecting the market demand for remodeling and renovation increase in national businesses of 20-25 billion dollars.
