September 27th is World Tourism Day

Growing up my father would talk about so many places around the world that he always wanted to visit. He would talk about these destinations as though he’d already been there. He knew so much about them but he could never visit them because he was working and struggling just to make ends meet. Now that he relies on elderly care, and he is alone with some of the financial resources required to take these trips, it seems almost cruel that he still holds onto the brochures and leafs through them every so often, daydreaming about the trips he never got to take.

Dad Always Wanted to Travel, but Isn’t It Too Late Since He Relies on Elderly Care in Delray Beach, FL

I thought about helping him travel and get to see some of these amazing destinations, but then he slipped and broke his hip and has since been relying on elder care services. At that point I knew that he could no longer travel. After all, whenever you are reliant on somebody else for your basic care at home, that generally means that you are going to be unable to travel and do most of the things you had been doing or always wanted to do, right?

The truth can set you free.

This was my position for more than a year. During his recovery from that broken hip, my father was relying on numerous elderly care providers, including physical therapists who work with him on a regular basis to regain the strength in his legs after his hip had healed. Within a few months he was back up on his feet walking around with assistance.

It became clear, though, that he was going to continue requiring some type of elderly care, probably for the rest of his life.

One day I decided to talk to the primary caregiver who spent the most time with him about his dreams of travel.

I learned that just because he requires assistance doesn’t mean he can’t travel and see all of the places he dreamed about. He is only limited by his financial resources.

Once I learned this, I began to look into having an elderly care provider travel with him and I decided that I would take the trip too. We weren’t going to be able to see all of his prime destinations, but even just a few for now would be more than I could ever have hoped to provide for him.

World Tourism Day is September 27th and I thought it was the prime opportunity to give my father a gift I simply didn’t think he could still enjoy. I’m glad I was wrong.
