The Refrigerator Can Point to the Need for Home Care for a Senior Living Alone

Home Care in Margate FL

For people concerned about their aging loved ones, especially parents who may be living at home alone, it can be difficult to determine whether they actually require some assistance, such as a home care aide. There may be certain health issues they’re dealing with on a regular basis. They may have been hospitalized recently following a heart attack or stroke, had major surgery, or have been dealing with some other serious issue.

Those situations can certainly point to the need for some type of home care, but what about for people who haven’t dealt with those serious health issues? There are certain things to look for with regard to safety and security for elderly individuals within the comfort of their home. One of those is to pay attention to the refrigerator.

The refrigerator can tell a lot about people and their ability to take care of themselves.

In most refrigerators across the United States there will be a number of perishable items. These could be leftovers from a dinner out at a restaurant, milk, cheese, cold cuts, and much, much more. When people forget about what they have, they may have a tendency to move stuff around and never clean out the refrigerator.  An open container, even a Styrofoam container from a local restaurant, can expose other food items in the refrigerator to bacteria as it grows on the food that begins to ‘go bad.’  The senior may also have very few items in the refrigerator at all. This could be a sign they’re having difficulty getting to the store.

If somebody no longer drives because she either doesn’t feel safe behind the wheel, voluntarily gave up her driver’s license, or had it revoked by the DMV, she may struggle to find a ride or a way to get to the store. As a result, there may be little to almost nothing in the refrigerator.

If the milk and other products expired a long time ago, it’s important to determine exactly what they may be eating at the moment. Seniors may readily admit that they don’t eat breakfast, rarely eat lunch, and only grab something small for dinner. This is not healthy for anyone, regardless of age.  If the refrigerator is showing signs that the senior can no longer take care of himself in a healthy manner, it’s time to discuss home care services.
