Unfortunately, there is a good chance that your senior parent with Alzheimer’s will fall at some point. As seniors get older and dementia progresses they often have problems with balance that can cause them to fall. But helping a senior parent after a fall is more difficult when that parent has Alzheimer’s because they don’t always understand that you’re trying to help them and if you give them instructions to help them get up they may not understand what you’re saying to them. If your senior parent with Alzheimer’s has been showing signs of having problems with their balance, almost falling, or shuffling their feet like they’re having trouble walking you should get Alzheimer’s care services for them.
What Alzheimer’s Care Provides
Alzheimer’s care is specialty care and the providers who work in Alzheimer’s care have training in how to do things like safely lift up an adult with Alzheimer’s who can’t help them. If your senior loved one falls at home, having Alzheimer’s care lowers the chances that your senior parent will get hurt as they are trying to get up.
If your senior parent with Alzheimer’s does fall when you are there you should:
Call For Help Immediately
Don’t waste time trying to get your senior loved one off the floor on your own. If you don’t have medical training you could end up hurting them more trying to get them up. Especially if there is a big size difference between you and your parent. Just call EMS immediately and let trained paramedics get your senior loved one safely up off the floor so they can assess their injuries.
Get Them Medical Treatment
Even if your senior parent doesn’t have any obvious injuries they need medical treatment. Your senior parent may not be able to tell you where they are having pain or how much pain they are actually in because of their dementia. Always get them to an ER and get them seen by a doctor to see if there are any injuries that need treatment. They may have internal injuries or other injuries that aren’t obvious but need to be treated right away.
Advocate For Them At The Hospital and Agree to Tests And Scans
Go with your senior parent to the hospital and stay by their side. Even if typically family members aren’t allowed to stay with patients, which is the case in some hospitals and ERs now because of COVID restrictions, you will be able to stay because your senior parent has Alzheimer’s and can’t effectively participate in their own care. You need to be able to speak up and advocate for them.
Agree to whatever tests or scans the doctors want to run to assess your senior parent’s injuries. Don’t worry about the cost of treatment. Because your senior parent can’t express where they are having pain or how much pain they are in the doctors may need to do additional tests and scans to determine what your senior parent’s injuries are.
