The way to nip stress in the bud is to try and keep the levels as low as possible. Because there are things that can come up on a daily basis that could be stress-inducing, it’s a really good idea to get in the habit of continually keeping the stress levels from increasing. Stress builds up and if not taken care of, can land you in a state of overwhelm. One way to combat stress is to have some strategies that keep you calm. This article will give you some techniques you can try as a family caregiver to stay calm more of the time.
- Do some deep breathing to help you avoid feeling anxious. This helps to reduce stress by providing extra oxygen for your brain. It helps you to focus. It will help you to think clearly. Sometimes when people are in a situation that causes a lot of anxiety, they may start to hold their breath or breathe too quickly. This is hyperventilating. The purpose of deep and slow breathing is to get this back under control.
- Your mind can help to distract you from a very annoying, frustrating or aggravating situation. Close your eyes and give yourself a mental diversion. This could be counting backwards starting at 100, and in jumps of 3. So 100, 97, 94, and so on. You could try reciting the lyrics to your favorite song. Any technique that helps you to calm down a little bit is very useful
- Progressively tense and relax different muscle groups throughout your body. You could start at the top of your body and work your way down. This accomplishes two things for you. First of all, it helps take your focus away from your fear or stress and helps you to concentrate on something else. Second, it helps relax your muscles and ease the tension away.
- Use some positive imagery. Replace the feelings of tension and stress with images of things that bring you peace and make you happy such as the beach or the mountains. Refuse to listen to the voices of self-doubt and replace them with nice things to say to yourself. In a moment of frustration it will be difficult to formulate these positive sayings, so make them ahead of time and write them on a little card to carry in your pocket.
- Do a little bit of exercise. Just like some of the other techniques, it helps by reducing caregiver stress as well as giving you something else to focus on. An active body releases endorphins which helps give you a peaceful feeling. You could go for a walk or do a few yoga poses; it doesn’t need to be something strenuous.
