October is National Cookbook Month. Decades ago, cookbooks were the source of all of the best recipes. Whether your loved one wanted a good book themed to a certain style of cooking (French recipes or baked goods), or if she chose a cookbook from her favorite chef, you can probably bet your loved one had stacks of cookbooks in her home growing up. Nowadays, many people simply go online to find their recipes, whether it’s on an app, on a YouTube Channel, or even on TikTok. Having an elder care aide available may help in participating in this celebration.
Elder Care Delray Beach FL – Celebrate National Cookbook Month TogetherDuring National Cookbook Month it’s a great time to dust off those old cookbooks that your elderly loved one has in her kitchen and give them a fresh lookover. Your loved one and you can have a lot of fun reliving some of those old recipes. If you aren’t nearby, ask her elder care provider for a bit of assistance in the fun. Her elder care provider can help her purchase ingredients, prep for the recipe, and even help follow the recipe. Of course, if she does, make sure your elder care provider is invited to enjoy the fruits of their hard work.
Let’s look at a couple of ways to celebrate National Cookbook Month.
Try a new recipe each week. This is a great month to crack open those pages sealed shut with sugar and try some new recipes. Sit down with your loved one and look for recipes that look delicious, then help her shop for the ingredients (or have her elder care provider add them to the list when they do their weekly shopping) and then plan a night to create it. You and your loved one might discover a new favorite!
Look for the strangest recipes. If your loved one has an older cookbook, you might find some really strange recipes in them. If you’re both feeling adventurous, try making a few just to see what used to be popular. Of course, it’s not a bad idea to have your local pizza delivery phone number on hand just in case you find out there’s a good reason why no one makes this particular item anymore.
Ask about the stories behind the recipes. If you’re looking in an old cookbook with your loved one and you see a recipe that’s obviously been used a lot throughout the years, ask your loved one about it. You can ask, “Who liked this recipe?” “Who normally prepared it?” “Was it an everyday recipe or a special occasion?” You might get some wonderful stories from your loved one.
Create a new cookbook. If your loved one has lots of recipes in her head but not written down, October is a great time to get those recipes on paper so future generations can enjoy them. Bookstores sell blank cookbooks where you can write down her favorite recipes. Many include a spot to write in a little memory as well, making it a true keepsake.
