Elder Care in Boynton Beach FL
Diabetes affects about 27 percent of older adults, which can become increasingly risky as they get older. The reason for this is because they are at risk for a number of complications due to this health condition, including kidney disease, blindness, and heart attacks. If this condition goes undiagnosed or the senior does not make the necessary changes to their diet and lifestyle, an elder care provider may be needed.
The word “diabetes” alone can be a scary one for any senior to hear, but they should think of it as a wakeup call. This is their body’s way of saying that it is time to get healthy. Type 2 Diabetes affects everyone differently, but there are some common symptoms to watch for when it comes to your elderly parent.
Symptoms
- Weight gain or loss. The elder may be eating more because their body has lost fluid. On the other hand, they may lose weight because the muscles are not getting enough glucose.
- Blurred vision. When the body is getting high levels of sugar, it could end up pulling fluid from the lenses of the eyes. If this occurs, they should see their doctor right away.
- Fatigue. Frequently feelings weak and lethargic.
- Constantly developing infections and sores do not heal quickly. Urinary tract infections are one of the most common infections seniors develop.
- Tingling or numbness. Parts of the body may have nerve damage as a result of poor circulation. A loss of feeling may occur in the feet, legs, arms, and hands.
- Gum disease. The gums may become red and inflamed for seniors with type 2 diabetes.
Treatments
The first thing the doctor may have the elder do is incorporate more exercise into their day, while also adding more wholesome foods to their diet, like fruits, veggies, and whole grains. If those things are not enough to manage their diabetes, medication may be necessary. Some common types of medications include:
- Thiazolidinedione (Glitazones): Makes the body more sensitive to insulin, but may cause weight gain, fatigue, and swelling
- Sulfonylureas: Encourages the pancreas to make more insulin. It is the most effective for adults who were diagnosed before the age of 40
- Meglitinides (Prandin): Helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels
- Metformin (Glucophage): Reduces the body’s resistance to insulin and helps to lower blood glucose
- Alpha-Glucosidase Inhibitors: Helps breakdown complex carbohydrates
Talk to your loved one’s doctor for more treatment options that may be available to them.
