January 26th is National Spouse’s Day. What is Spouse’s Day?
It’s a day for spouse’s to spend quality time together without letting work and other personal responsibilities get in the way. When you’re a family caregiver, it can be very hard to walk away from your parent. It is essential that you do take time for your spouse.
Facts About Marriage and Divorce
In 2016, the CDC reported there were more than 2.2 million marriages in the U.S. There were also more than 827,000 divorces. Some of the reasons people say they’re getting divorced include not really committing to the marriage, too many arguments, and unrealistic expectations.
When you’re caring for elderly parents, it is hard to balance time with your spouse and time spent meeting your parents’ needs. It can make it hard to commit fully to the marriage and can lead to arguments. National Spouse’s Day is a start, but you need to learn to let others handle some of your parents’ needs so that you can focus on your spouse.
Things to Do on Spouse’s Day
You might not be able to leave town for an overnight stay somewhere romantic, but there are ways to spend time together that don’t cost a lot. While someone else spends time with your parents, get the ingredients for a romantic dinner. Head home, get the meal prepped and set the table.
After dinner, you can cozy up on the sofa together and watch a movie, you both love. Other couples enjoy going for a stroll under the stars, going to a restaurant for a meal out, or catching dinner and a show. They’re all great ways to spend quality time together.
Respite Care is Essential for Having Time With Your Spouse
Respite care is an essential part of any family caregiver’s weekly plans. Caregivers are the ones to call for respite care services. While you go out with your spouse, caregivers sit with your parents and take care of whatever tasks are on the schedule.
If you’re going out with your spouse for the night and your dad needs his medications before he goes to bed, a caregiver can be there to remind him to take them. Caregivers can cook meals, do his laundry, and make sure he brushes his teeth if he can’t do it himself. All it takes is a call.
