Caregiver in Lighthouse Point FL
Have you ever saved a letter or card from a loved one because they had some of the most beautiful penmanship you’d ever seen? Or because it was written on very special stationery? Maybe you just wanted to hang onto something so personal from them? All these reasons are good ones, not to mention important, especially in an age where the written word so often seems to be condensed to emails and text messages, at least for some people. There’s just something very special about receiving a card or letter that’s handwritten.
Why not take a break from the routine and hustle & bustle of being a family caregiver for your senior parent or other loved one, and help them write an actual letter to somebody they care about? Can you imagine the feeling the recipient will get when it arrives and they open it?
It doesn’t have to be a real long letter, especially if holding a pen for long periods is difficult for them. It doesn’t even have to be on expensive paper.
Most office supply stores carry a variety of paper in different weights and kinds—linens, parchments, you name it. Many even have matching envelopes. You may be able to buy stationery individually. But more often than not, stationery come in a box ranging from 10 count, all the way up to 100 or 500. You probably don’t need that much paper stock. Or perhaps you and your family member don’t want to get special paper at all. Regular notepaper and a standard white envelope will work just fine, too.
What about the old-fashioned handwritten Christmas cards—remember those? Some people complain these days about receiving only electronic cards or computer-printed newsletters telling them all about their latest family conquests. Why not help your loved one be different?
Buy assorted greeting cards and holiday cards in the store (ideally when they are on sale) and help them write them out for holidays and special occasions. They can write the card and you can address the envelopes. Or for some fun and extra personalization, show them how to make their own greeting cards on the computer. The message inside can still be handwritten, if you or they choose.
The important thing is to let your loved one be remembered for bucking the trend, by sending out something handwritten and personal, instead of being part of the status quo.
