April 7’s World Health Day is a time to look at ways to make people healthier. It may be changes that improve mental health or physical health. For this year’s World Health Day, take a look at ways you can help your parents thrive while they’re aging at home.
Aging takes everyone by surprise. From the start of arthritis pain in the fingers to changing vision that makes fine print tough to read, it’s unexpected. As your parent’s age, they’re probably like thousands of other older adults who do not want to have to move.
It’s very possible for your parents to age at home without fear or reservation. If you’re worried about them living at home alone, there are things you can do to ease your mind and help them thrive.
Help Them When You Can
One of the best things you can do is to help your parents when you can. Don’t agree to help so much that you end up feeling burdened. If you are busy at work, stopping by every night to cook their dinner is going to become exhausting. Instead, agree to stop by on one of the two weekend days and prepare several meals that they can reheat.
Don’t feel bad if you can’t help out as much as you’d like. Do what you can and help them arrange senior care, landscaping, and other services that help them age at home without having to risk their well-being.
Make Sure They Remain Social
It’s easy to lose track of friends after retirement. People may move to a new location to be in a warmer area, reduce their cost of living, or to be closer to grandchildren. If that happens, your parents may find themselves with no friends in the area and fewer chances to be social.
Make sure your parents have opportunities to stay social. Encourage them to join a senior center for luncheons, group outings, and classes. Have them sign up for volunteer opportunities at local hospitals, schools, and museums. All of these options help them find new ways to make friends and socialize.
Arrange Senior Care Services
Arrange for senior care aides to stop by and help your parents with the trickier parts of living at home. If your parents aren’t supposed to drive, caregivers can help out. Other helpful senior care services include meal preparation, companionship, and housekeeping. Call to learn more.
